Show Some Pride

Ahhhh….Fall….it’s one of my favorite times of the year – leaves changing, temperatures dropping, the ability to actually wear clothes without sweating through them by noon…..

For the past three years Fall has been the time in Atlanta for one of the biggest Gay Pride celebrations at Piedmont Park. This year’s 41st Annual PRIDE festival will take place in Atlanta October 8th-9th 2011.

In order to show our support we’re offering a triangle-shaped bikini wax with a box of Pink Betty dye for only $55. Because we can’t think of a better way to show our PRIDE.

Natural Deodorant that WORKS: Does It Exist?

WAX is a little divided.  While natural deodorant usually means less waste, skin soothing essential oils, and no preservatives, there’s a few of us that truly prefer an anti-perspirant.  Even though an all natural deodorant may be better for the earth, what about the OTHER ‘environmental impact’…. you know, the stink factor??

Since there has been much controversy over the toxicity of aluminum in anti-perspirants for the past few years, some of us would just prefer to stay on the safe side.  As more research is conducted to find links between the use of heavy metals in deodorants and Alzheimer’s and breast cancer, it is yet to be proven that the aluminum and parabens have detrimental effects…. is it worth the risk?

We’ve put together a little list of some of the best brands that we’ve found, and all for different reasons.  While we may not be able to provide any scientific conclusions, we can certainly tell you which ones seem to do the trick:

Myka: Vichy 48 hour Antiperspirant for Sensitive & Depilated Skin ($12 at amazon.com)

“I’ve tried the natural things and they just don’t work for me. I have a tendency to sweat a lot under my arms and I find that the natural products don’t help me in that area. This deodorant is brilliant – keeps me nice and dry (even in a silk shirt!) and because it’s hypoallergenic, alcohol-free & perfume-free it works great for freshly waxed underarms.”

Leela:  La Vanilla ($18 at Sephora.com)

“I know, I know.  The price point seems a little steep for a deodorant, but for me it’s totally worth it.  It’s aluminum and harsh chemical free, and it keeps me fresh and dry all day long.  All of the scents are based on vanilla (clearly…), which makes for a nice subtle fragrance.  I love this deodorant, and $18 for a bare necessity (that works!) that will last me 3-4 months is OK in my book.”

Misty:  Homemade deodorant  (about $5 for one stick)

“I recently started making my own deodorant at home.  My handmade deodorant is free of chemicals and preservatives, and so far, it’s been really great at keeping me fresh all day long.  It doesn’t prevent sweating, which doesn’t bother me.  I feel like you’re suppose to sweat.  As of right now, my most favorite scents are:  Lime and Basil (everyone seems to like that one the most) and Blue Camomile with Eucalyptus and Geranium.”

Regina:  Suave with Olay ($4 at Target)

“When I look for a deodorant, I’m looking for one that smells good.  I love Olay products, so this one is my favorite.  I don’t have much of a sweating problem, but at the end of the day I might feel a little funky.  This deodorant isn’t all natural, but it works for me because I really like the scent.”

Less Bush. More Trees™

In the Fall of 2010 a drunk driver took out three cars and two trees in front of WAX’s studio.  One year later, nothing has been replanted. Much like Washington, no one can come to an agreement and typical bureaucratic delays have left the sidewalk bare. After staring at stumps for almost one year, WAX has decided to take matters into their own hands with the launch of the Less Bush. More Trees™ campaign. Originally started to offer support to Trees Atlanta in replacing those fallen trees, WAX realized that the impact could go much further.

Less Bush. More Trees™ is WAX’s way of giving back to the community and supporting the environment while expanding the WAX brand. WAX will be partnering with different charities throughout the Atlanta area to lend their support to various causes via donations from products developed by WAX.

The first partnership is with Trees Atlanta. WAX will be selling the Less Bush. More Trees™ tote in the studio in order to raise money to replace those fallen trees. The totes are designed by WAX, produced here in Atlanta and cost $15.  100% of all sales of our Less Bush. More Trees™ tote will be donated to Trees Atlanta.

Stay tuned for more Less Bush.More Trees by following us on Twitter or Facebook.

Misty’s Addictions…

Fall is slowly creeping in, with it’s much welcomed weather changes and  new seasonal latte flavors!  At WAX, it’s a time to revamp, regroup, and also, reflect on our latest obsessions.
Here are just  a few of Misty’s latest addictions for this month:
1.)  Youngblood Mineral Makeup.  It’s so light and airy, my face never feels weighed down.  This is my clear skin beauty secret, for sure.
2.) Cameras: I Love Them!! I currently carry a Sony NEX3 for all digital shots. I have been scoping out www.lomography.com for a broad spectrum of fun film cameras. My favorite film cameras: Golden Half, Holga 120, Diana and Kodak Brownies.
3.)   Old Gringo Boots:  My latest addition to my boot collection, SO cute.  I have a serious boot fetish…
4.)   A purchase I made in Holland.. www.mono-amsterdam.com. I carry a hip bag (this is not a fanny pack) its much cooler than that. I can get everything I NEED in it without overloading myself with junk.
5.)  Pumpkin spiced…….anything!
6.)  Glow brow powder. I never leave the house before I put my eyebrows on!!
I never realized how many things there are that I LOVE!

WAX is InStyle!

I was in Newport, RI when I got the call that WAX was being considered for a nationwide roundup on beauty services for InStyle. I played it cool and calm on the phone with the writer, but promptly hung up and danced a little jig on the sidewalk with my best friend as curious passerby looked on…InStyle! What an honor – must mean we’re doing something right.

It’s been a busy year for us, we’ve grown by leaps and bounds and have had a lot of great experiences along the way. Both locally and nationally we’ve been recognized for what we’re doing and that’s been amazing. Daily Candy, The Atlantan, Allure – It’s been kind of surreal – I opened WAX last year with little more than an idea and a commitment to doing something different that would really resonate with people. I’ve been beyond blessed to have found a great staff, great clients and great friends along the way. A lot of them were featured in InStyle as well – showing that Atlanta has a lot to offer and a lot of great small businesses doing great things. If you haven’t gotten the chance to check out the October issue you should – The Aviary & Adore (friends and neighbors!) were featured – showing that you can get all of your beauty needs serviced within a 1 mile radius of WAX.

This summer has been a great one for me. On both a local and a national level we’ve gotten the type of press that most small businesses only dream of. I don’t think that I’m alone in saying that even when we know what we’re doing is great, it never hurts to have someone tell you. It reminds you to have faith in yourself and trust that your knowledge, instincts and ideas are good ones.

As an entrepreneur I wrestle with those thoughts sometimes. Hearing from people that what you’re doing is valuable and good makes it all worth it. Thanks to all of our great clients who have helped us get to where we are – we’re going to keep doing what we do and we hope that you will continue to join us on our journey!
